Run-off is when an insurance company decides to exit a line of business, or that particular insurance market altogether, in order to bring finality to its portfolio of liabilities. Companies in run-off have stopped writing new coverage and policies for a particular product, but the existing policies of the ceased line remain in effect until all liabilities have been resolved.
